The UFC 116 main event delivered one of the best come back victories of the year by Brock Lesnar.
In the first round Lesnar and Carwin circled the Octagon looking to feel each other out. Around the four minute mark Lesnar shot in and attempted a takedown, but Carwin was able to shrug him off and quickly stop the attempt with a whizzer and stood up. During the stand up Carwin managed to also clip Lesnar and keep him at bay. Carwin’s confidence grew as the two fighters began to circle again, and he nailed the heavyweight champion with a straight right punch while covering and followed up with left uppercut to the jaw.
Lesnar was rocked and quickly began to back peddle away from the challenger, Carwin sensing he was hurt ran in and began to catch Lesnar with bombs. Lesnar fell to the ground and turtled up as Carwin began to lay down punishment, he was hit big punch after big punch, but survived. Carwin was able to eventually get into the mount and was landing elbows, punches and anything he wanted.
Lesnar covered up well with his XXXXL sized hands and gloves, but was cut above both of his swollen eyes. Carwin was landing everything he could to finish Lesnar and take the title and two of his elbows splattered blood on the Octagon canvas. During the end of the round Carwin was clearly tired and Lesnar stood up and attempted a double-leg takedown, but the round ended with both fighters clearly tired.
In the beginning of the second round both fighters waited for the bell to ring, Carwin winked his eye at a smiling Lesnar. The moment was eerily reminiscent of how Lesnar made Frank Mir smile at the beginning of the second round at UFC 100 almost one year ago. Lesnar’s face was busted up badly, both eyes swollen.
When the action started again, both fighters threw punches and both looked very tired. Carwin was throwing punches, but was wobbling while standing. During the 3:30 mark, Lesnar shot in for a double-leg takedown and Carwin was too tired to defend. He quickly fell to his back and Lesnar quickly transitioned into full-mount.
Moments later Lesnar moved into an arm-triangle choke, but Carwin looked composed and did not appear in danger. Carwin fought off the choke with his elbows, looking for space at first. Seconds later Lesnar changed his body position and Carwin tapped out.
In the post-fight interview Lesnar told Joe Rogan he knew Carwin would gas out, saying each punch in the first round was “less and less traumatic”. A humbled Lesnar said gave praise for the victory to his team, family and training partners. A far cry from the outburst he threw after defeating Frank Mir at UFC 100 in his last successful title defense.
