The card featured both professional and amateur fighters and was c0-promoted by Dash and King entertainment.
According to a report from MMAFighting.com via WRDW News 12, the 30 year old Kirkham had fought six times going 3-3 as an amateur lightweight fighter before making his debut as a professional this weekend.
Kirkham was big for a lightweight standing at 6′9″, but was injured during the fight and lost by TKO after being hit with some ground and pound. Kirkham was rushed after the bout to Aiken Medical facility and was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
Kirkham is unfortunately the second fighter in the sport to ever die during a sanctioned event. In November of 2007, Sam Vasquez slipped into a coma shortly after a fight in Houston, Texas and slipped into a coma for 42 days afterwards. Vasquez eventually lost his life due to the head injuries he suffered in the fight in October.
We send our deepest sympathies to the family of Kirkham and his fiance Jessica Paulson.
